Sustainability

The last decades have seen the European Union increasingly committed to sustainability, especially with regard to internal energy policies.

In the energy sector, since 2009, the Renewable Energy Directive requires that at least 20 per cent of the energy produced and used in the European Union comes from renewable sources. To achieve this target, a key role is played by the use of renewable raw materials for the production of sustainable biofuels and bioliquids as energy and heat resources, as alternatives to fossil fuels.

Only biofuels and bioliquids that comply with Directive 2009/28/EC (RED) can access government support programmes and/or contribute to each member country’s mandatory greenhouse gas emission reduction target.

Close control over the entire supply chain is of paramount importance to fulfil the requirements of the RED directive. A complete and detailed traceability of raw materials, intermediate products, by-products, and waste is key to guarantee a real reduction of CO2 emissions.

At the same time, indirect land use change for biofuel production must be avoided. To this end, since 2015, the ILUC Directive 2015/1513 (Indirect Land Use Change) includes, among the information to be sent to Member States annually, estimated values of emissions due to indirect land use change for marketed biofuels, thus increasing their importance in the oil & gas sector.

With in-depth knowledge of the regulatory environment and changing markets, Etacarinae is able to offer services to ensure the sustainability of its clients’ business and full compliance with current regulations.

Etacarinae a world leader in sustainability, legislation and market management of the bioenergy sector.
