Voluntary schemes

Since 2009, the European Union has set clear targets for renewable energy consumption in member countries. Directive (EU) 2023/2413 (RED III) updating Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II) set a minimum target of 42.5 percent renewable energy by 2030, with 29 percent in transport. Biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels can only be counted if they are certified under schemes approved by the European Commission under the RED II Directive.

The main Certification Schemes

  • 2BSvs: is a scheme that allows industry operators to demonstrate compliance with EU Directive 2009/28 (RED), ensuring that biomass is properly used for biofuel production. 2BSvs certification enables access to financial incentives and European biofuel markets;
  • ISCC EU: is a certification that verifies compliance with EU sustainability and GHG emission reduction requirements for sustainable fuels and biomass energy production;
  • REDCert EU: is a scheme that applies to all actors in the biomass and biofuels supply chain, and Etacarinae supports companies in achieving sustainability goals in accordance with REDCert EU standards;
  • Better Biomass: is a certificate that is used to demonstrate the sustainability of biomass used for energy, fuels or bio-based products;
  • Bonsucro: is an internationally recognized certificate for sustainability along the sugarcane supply chain.

Why certify?

Certification according to RED II-recognized schemes is essential for:

  • Marketing biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels in domestic and European markets;
  • Accessing economic incentives;
  • Increasing market competitiveness.

Certification ensures the credibility of fuel information by ensuring compliance with RED II sustainability criteria, greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction, traceability and chain of custody of raw materials.
