ISCC Corsia Certification
The growing need to reduce the environmental impact of the transportation sector has led to the development of regulatory frameworks and voluntary initiatives that impose increasingly stringent constraints. Specifically, within the aviation sector, the following initiative has assumed a prominent role COURSE (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) developed by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization).
The goal of this initiative, among others, is to. stabilize international aviation emissions at 2020 levels by requiring airlines to offset any growth in CO₂ emissions beyond 2020 levels.
In order to be able to reduce CO₂ emissions. emissions from the sector, therefore, CORSIA strongly supports the adoption of sustainable fuels, so-called SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuels) that can significantly reduce lifecycle CO₂ emissions compared to conventional jet fuel, with some SAF pathways achieving emission reductions of up to 90 percent or more.
The certification scheme
ISCC CORSIA
ISCC has developed, among others, a certification scheme called ISCC CORSIA, approved by ICAO, aimed at ensuring the sustainability of SAFs and their respective supply chains.
This certification is based on several crucial aspects common to other certification schemes with similar purposes (e.g., voluntary ISCC EU scheme), such as:
- Batch traceability: ensuring that the finished product can be traced back along the supply chain;
- Ensuring minimum GHG emission savings.: key criterion in discriminating sustainable fuel lots from unsustainable lots;
- Proper preparation of sustainability documents: that accompany physical product batches, proving sustainability;
- Proper management of a mass balance system.: aimed at ensuring, among other things, that the quantity of sustainable product surrendered by each certified operator is never in excess of the quantity received and/or produced internally.
To whom the certification
ISCC Corsia applies
- Aviation biofuel (SAF) producers.: Companies that produce SAF from sustainable feedstocks such as vegetable oils, animal fats, waste cooking oils, biomass or organic waste;
- Raw material suppliers.: Growers, harvesters and suppliers of biomass and other materials suitable for SAF production;
- Processing plants.: refineries and plants that convert raw materials into fuels suitable for aviation;
- Traders and distributors: brokers and suppliers who handle and market ISCC CORSIA-certified SAFs;
- Airlines.: If they purchase certified SAFs, they can use the relevant emission reduction credits for compliance with the CORSIA program;
- Other supply chain actors.: including logistics operators and blending plants involved in fuel distribution.
The certification process
ISCC Corsia
The certificate ISCC CORSIA is valid for a period of 12 months.
The audit process consists of the stages:
- Initial audit: Comprehensive verification of the compliance of the management system with ISCC CORSIA requirements;
- Surveillance audit (A): After 6 months from certificate issuance, for economic operators handling high-risk products (such as waste/residues);
- Surveillance audit (B): After 3 months from the issuance of the certificate, for collecting points and traders handling both waste/residue products and virgin vegetable oils, in addition to the above;
- Re-certification audit: To be carried out within 12 months of certificate issuance.
