Mass balance

The mass balance is a chain-of-custody option that allows lots with different sustainability characteristics to be mixed, ensuring that these sustainability characteristics remain associated with the lots, in the same quantities, and that the lots themselves are traceable.

Compliance with the balance or mass balance is a mandatory requirement under Art. 30 of Directive (EU) 2018/2001 (RED II).

Therefore, economic operators certified according to the Italian National Scheme (NIS) or according to Voluntary Schemes recognized at the European level by the Commission, such as ISCC EU, must implement appropriate management systems to record all incoming and outgoing consignments handled by a company, to verify the mass balance (on at least a quarterly basis) for each storage site, and to reconstruct full traceability of each transaction.

EtaCarinae provides mass balance templates customized to the business reality of the economic operator and the possibility of outsourcing the mass balance management service.

Regarding the incoming sustainability documentation, EtaCarinae takes care of verifying its correctness, reporting any errors and requesting corrections from suppliers by conducting second-party match checks.

For the outbound sustainability documentation, EtaCarinae can record matches in the mass balance, creating documentation for clients or verifying that the documentation prepared for clients complies with the requirements of the certification scheme.

For obligated parties, EtaCarinae provides support in managing the “BIOCAR“, on the website of the GSE (Manager of Energy Services), for the purpose of annual self-certification of the quantities of renewable energy carriers of biological origin released for consumption.

In this regard, EtaCarinae offers help in implementing the “CSV” for massive upload to the “BIOCAR” portal, as well as in the verification of the CIC (Certificates of Release for Consumption) accrued by the obligor.

Etacarinae a world leader in sustainability, legislation and market management of the bioenergy sector.
