Over the past decade, the share of consumption from renewable sources in Italy has increased considerably, allowing the national target for 2020 (17 percent) to be reached since 2014. This is noted by Istat in the ‘2018 SDGs Report’, which proposes an update and expansion of the application in Italy of the 2030 Agenda adopted in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly consisting of 17 goals (Sustainable Development Goals – SDGs), declined in 169 targets, which refer to different domains of social and economic development. <\/p>\n
THE LAST TWO YEARS SIGN A TENDENCY INVERSION
\nThe years between 2013 and 2015 are characterized by a slowdown in growth, while for 2016 the share of consumption from Fer shows a very slight decline, standing at 17.4 percent. Istat’s analysis of the ‘sustainable energy’ goal (goal 7) shows that in Italy the contribution of renewable sources to electricity generation has grown rapidly over time, from 13.8 percent in 2005 to 37.3 percent in 2014. The last two years, however, mark a reversal: the percentage of electricity consumption covered by renewable sources decreases to 33.1 percent in 2016. <\/p>\n
VALLE D’AOSTA AND TRENTINO ALTO ADIGE AT THE TOP FOR RES CONSUMPTION
\nHowever, Italy stands ahead of other EU countries. The regions that contribute most to consumption from Electric Fer are, in addition to Valle d’Aosta and Trentino Alto Adige (where production from renewables exceeds domestic demand), Molise (87 percent), Basilicata (81 percent) and Calabria (77 percent). In contrast, renewable sources are more sparsely exploited in Liguria (9 percent), Lazio (14 percent) and Emilia-Romagna (20 percent). Overall, the contribution of renewables to the electricity sector is higher in the South, where it reaches 42 percent, placing it at 31 percent in the North and 28 percent in the central distribution. <\/p>\n
ENERGY INTENSITY FALLS
\nIn addition to historically being characterized by lower levels than the EU average and many of its main competitors, Italy has seen its energy intensity gradually decline over time (between 2006 and 2016, from 13.2 to 98.4 kilograms of oil equivalent per 1,000 euros of GDP). However, our country shows less progress over time than the EU average, registering a change from 2006 of -13 percent, compared to an average change of -18 percent. <\/p>\n
STABLE HOUSEHOLD SATISFACTION FOR ELECTRIC SERVICE
\nIn contrast, household satisfaction with electric service is stable. The share of households very or fairly satisfied with the continuity of electric service equal to, in 2017, 92.5 percent), shows a basically stable trend since 2010. Finally, the share of the population unable to heat their homes is growing. Italy sees a consistent increase in the share of the population that has difficulty adequately heating their homes between 2009 (10.8 percent) and 2012 (21.3 percent). The last four years mark a reversal and the indicator falls to 16.1 percent, still being above pre-crisis values. <\/p>\n
